The Benefits of Geothermal Energy

In our day to day life, we make use of many kinds of resources in one or another way. Resources can be classified into two categories:

Renewable resource:

These are the resources which are replenished by the environment in a short period of time. Examples are: – Geothermal energy, biofuels, solar energy, etc.

Non-renewable resources:

These resources cannot be replenished by the environment in a short period of time. Examples are- Natural gas, Coal, etc.

Both renewable and non-renewable resources are equally important, but here we would zero in our attention towards a particular type of energy which is ‘Geothermal energy’ as it is quite different from other conventional forms of energy.

The word Geothermal comprises of two words geo and thermal. Geo means earth and thermal means heat which explains the word to a T. As we know that the earth is mainly made up of crust, mantle, and core. Lava and magma flow inside the crust which increases the temperature down there. This heat can be used as a significant source of energy. This energy can be used to generate electricity and in areas where a large amount of heat is required.

Advantages of Geothermal energy are as follows:

Environment-friendly:

The energy is not extracted by burning any fossil fuels, so it does not cause pollution and is environment-friendly.

Renewable resource:

The biggest concern of a resource is its existence. Geothermal energy can be replenished from time to time.

Low cost:

The money spent on extracting the energy is less as compared to other forms of energy.

Less energy:

Even a small portion of the energy spent can produce a large amount of electricity.

Decreases dependency:

If a country has geothermal energy reserves it need not be dependent on other sources or countries to meet the needs of its people.

Employment:

The extraction of geothermal energy requires manpower and laborers. This provides employment to a large population.

It can be concluded that Geothermal energy is one of the most reliable and stable forms of energy. You can find a full list of pros and cons of geothermal energy here.
