How to Choose between Decor Blinds and Shutters

Choosing between decor blinds and shutters can depend on just your personal preference, but also consider the fact that they function a bit differently.

Décor Blinds

Blinds come in different styles, either with horizontal or vertical slats. Blinds can be made from different materials as well, including aluminum or wood. Depending on the type of material of the blind, the price will vary. There are also a number of different styles to match the home décor. Some blinds will block more light than others. Not every style will block that much light, which can raise some security concerns for buyers.

When choosing blinds, you first want to determine the width of the slats. A ½-inch slat is the most popular option, but some will choose 1-inch or 2-inch slats for a different look. Then you will need to decide between vertical or horizontal blinds. Vertical blinds are best for sliding glass doors or more expansive windows. You can choose a different color for blinds, but you may want to choose something neutral unless you don’t plan on changing the colors of your room. You usually don’t want a blind to be the focal point of the area. The better quality of the blinds the more expensive they will be, but the longer they will last. Cheap blinds might have slats that bend or cords that can easily break.

Shutters

Bewteen decor blinds and shutters, shutters are usually a more expensive option for the home, but can add a lot of home value. There are plenty of styles to choose from to match the home. Since you can adjust the slats of the shutters, you can control the light that comes into the home as well as the level of privacy. Shutters will provide better light regulation and privacy than blinds and are easier to clean than alternative window treatments, like shades.

Most shutters will have horizontal slats that can be adjusted to let in the desired amount of light. Depending on the type of shutter, there will be different sized slats. Some are designed to let in more air while blocking hot sun, and some are designed for smaller openings for colder climates. Shutters can be made out of different types of wood, including polywood, which is a popular choice because it is durable and won’t crack or warp. They can also take paint well. Vinyl shutters work for areas that are moist or damp because they won’t warp like wood does. However, these do not take paint well.
