New Year – Time to Think About Your Garden?

If there is one thing that the pandemic and the changes that we have all lived through in the last year has taught us, it is just how important it is to make the most of the outdoor space that we have, no matter how little an area, or how large, it is. If you have been promising yourself for a while that you really should sort out your garden, make 2021 the year that you do it; this is one resolution you should try and stick to.

Where should you start?

After a winter of little work any garden is going to need a good tidy up before you can really get to work on the finer details. The spring can be a good time to start looking after your lawn, but you probably won’t have done much with it over the winter. Give it a gentle mow, do not be tempted to cut it too short; it hasn’t been cut for a while but whilst the weather is still quite cold it is better to mow it a little at a time. It can also be a good idea to rake and scarify your lawn, this will help to remove any dead grass, debris and moss. Don’t forget to edge your beds – this will give them an instant facelift.

Although the soil in your flower beds may be a little heavy, it can be a good idea to dig them over to help aerate them, remove any weeds and dead plants, trim back any dead foliage and tidy up the plants that you want to keep. Now is also the time to prune back any summer flowering shrubs.

Landscaping

Once you have tidied up your lawn and your flower beds you will be able to see your garden properly. If there are some changes that you have been considering making, then spring is a great time to work on them. Perhaps you want to widen your existing flower beds, add a new one or relandscape parts of your garden. Get out some paper and make a few sketches, if you are not quite sure what you want to do the internet can be a great source of inspiration. You might want to think about adding a wider range of colours and textures to your flower beds or perhaps this year is the one for putting in a path or even replacing your patio area. If you want to make the most of your garden so you can really enjoy it then think about creating different areas where you can relax.

If you are fortunate enough to have a larger garden, then you may even want to consider having two seating areas in different parts of the garden so that you can catch the sun for most of the day. If you do plan to do this then look at companies like Lazy Susan, who offer a wide range of garden furniture that will work well when it comes to giving you a range of different seating options.

No limits if you use your imagination

When it comes to doing something different with your garden you are only limited by its size and your budget. If you are considering new plants but are not sure what will grow well then there are online forums who will be happy to advise you and when they are fully open again, garden centres have their own experts who will be very knowledgeable about the local area and will be able to point you in the right direction. With a little hard work now, you could have the perfect garden for relaxing in this summer.
