Toggle1. Are the Company and Workers Licensed and Insured?
Reputable and reliable roofing companies will be ready to show evidence that they have workman’s compensation and liability insurance to protect both their staff and homeowners.
Should an incident occur during a project, homeowners or their insurance company can be held liable if the providers they contract with don’t have adequate and current coverage.
Any business should have an operating license and it’s preferable to choose a roofing company with roofers that are licensed or have some formal training beyond on the job experience when possible. However, licensure requirements vary from state to state and county to county.
2. Can You Provide Me With Customer References?
Hiring a new roofing contractor company without reviewing and confirming previous customer references is risky.
By getting references, you can find out how well they performed from former clients, how clean they were, and may even be able to drive by sites to view previous work in person.
Online reviews and BBB ratings can also be useful for reference.
3. Does Your Company Use Subcontractors?
While companies that use subcontractors shouldn’t be eliminated from the competition, there are additional considerations when using their services.
For example, subcontractors will need to be asked the same questions as the primary roofing contractor, and they will also need to be insured and/or licensed.
You will also want to get a lien waiver signed that releases you from fiscal responsibility should your contractor not pay subcontractors.
